Silent voices on the behalf of trees against pollution and rampant deforestation.

On the occasion of the World Environment Day 2010, Chomolungma UNESCO Centre (CUC) launched the Green Knot Project by tying a green knot around the historic Pipal tree of New Road. The purpose of this gesture was to air our silent voices on behalf of all the trees within the valley and against rampant pollution, which is far too apparent in the roads, rivers and streams of this holy city.
After the initial knot tying ceremony, the participants, wearing Green Ribbons on their chest, tied green knots on the roadside railings that run from Juddha Salik to New Road Gate. Then they headed to Thapathali Bridge, tying knots on lampposts, trees and railing on the way. Many bystanders including activists taking part in environment rallies and even traffic control officers helped promote the campaign by wearing green ribbon on their chest and arms. The participants also distributed leaflets, which urged people to embrace the green knot and to work towards protecting the environment.
After the conclusion of the main event, there was a brief interaction programme, where participants discussed on ways to make eco friendly changes starting from their homes. They discussed on proper waste management, energy conservation, sustainable business options and on ways to sensitize and involve people in safeguarding our environment.
